Derby Food & Drink Awards 2013 – Get voting guys!

Hey guys, hope you’re all having a super week so far. The weather is gorgeous, let’s hope it stays put and the delectable sunshine doesn’t succumb to rain clouds (come on Mr Weather, play nice, it is only August).

I’m curious – what is your Achilles Heel? Mine is cake. Or coffee. Or cake. Right now, as I try to stave off midnight cravings, this little beauty pops into mind. I snapped this photo a few weeks ago, but I came across it whilst surfing through my chocca photo gallery. The point of me sharing this photo (apart from seeing a larger version of it on-screen and salivating even more), is that I love championing good food. And whenever I get the opportunity to spread the word, I’ll happily climb a roof-top with tannoy in tow to broadcast the news. This heavenly creation is a Strawberries & Cream Victoria Sandwich at Jack Rabbits. If you ever fancy cake (or scrummy lunch), do check them out.

JackRabbitsI had a great response to my previous post asking for eating / drinking recommendations. Merci beaucoup to Visit Derby for the heads up on the Winners’ Shortlist of last year’s Food & Drink Awards (link here). This year’s Awards will be taking place on Monday 21st October which I’m rather excited about. There are 10 categories, ranging from Best International to Best Out of Town establishment. Last year a whopping 26 different places made it onto the coveted Shortlist. Kudos to Restaurant Zest, which picked up a double whammy last year for Best Customer Service and Restaurant of the Year (they also happen to do the best chunky chips in town).

Last year’s winners have gone from strength to strength and as the aforementioned award categories are non-restrictive, you can vote for whichever place your little heart desires. You can even vote for last year’s winners – the choice is yours.

As a self-confessed foodie, I’m a firm believer in championing good food and drink. I think awards such as these are an excellent idea, because they recognise fabulous spaces and delicious food, whilst the smaller joints get appreciation and a great platform to boost their business.

Nominations are now open, so get voting for your favourite restaurant / bar / hang-out place by clicking here. Now, what if you don’t know where to start? Well, I’m pleased to say that you’ll get a helping hand from moi. I’ll be working my way through places that I think look and sound cool. Or any place that simply intrigues me (I’m an inquisitive soul, bite me). Polite note to restaurateurs / café owners: if you see me loitering with intent outside your cherished building, I’m just earmarking your fine establishment for me to review on my blog; I mean no harm, I promise.

I’ve already ticked off Jack Rabbits (see previous post) which I cannot recommend highly enough. The beauty of these Food and Drink Awards, is that you can nominate your favourite place in any category you see fit. For example, I think Jack Rabbits would fit nicely under either Best Lunch; you may disagree and want to nominate it for Best Café. Capische? So come on guys, show some lovin’ to your favourite eatery / watering hole and get voting now.

Just to reiterate, if there are any places that you want me to check out, then hit me up on [email protected]. Thank you to all who have already emailed in with their recommendations. I look forward to hitting those places in the upcoming weeks and letting you guys know what’s hot and not. See you soon.
