This Derby foodie was pleased to hear about a neighbouring city upping the foodie stakes. Taste of Nottingham, a week long food and drink extravaganza organised by the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID), got off to a flying start with a Craft Beer and Sausage tasting event yesterday at one of Nottingham newest venues: Oaks on Bromley Place.

I’ve been to Oaks and loved their meaty offerings (check out my review here from last month). Loud and proud carnivores munched on five different hand-made sausages using locally sourced ingredients and sipped a selection of craft ales that had been carefully paired with the sausages.

So, what exactly is this magical foodie festival that you must check out? A Taste of Nottingham is a city-wide culinary celebration. Nottingham showcases its fabulous food and drink venues, encouraging visitors to make the city their foodie destination of choice when it comes to experiencing new flavours and surroundings or enjoying old favourites.

Other events taking place during the week are a Burrito Making Masterclass on Thursday 24 September at Barburrito, King Street at 7pm (£10 per person); MacMillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 25 September from 8.00am to 11.00am at Genting Casino in the Cornerhouse; Sushi Masterclass on Saturday 26 September at 2pm at Chino Latino, Maid Marian Way (£20 per person).

During this special week, people will also be encouraged to enjoy an excellent Dine for £10 menu deal offered by some of Nottingham’s favourite city centre restaurants, cafes and bars.  These include Oaks, World Service, Three Crowns, Carluccio’s, Cape, Red Hot World Buffet and Rum House.

All details of the events and the venues taking part (together with exclusive offers, features and recipes showcasing Nottingham’s superb food and drink offering) have been brought together in a specially-created Taste of Nottingham guide available in the city centre at the businesses involved, hotels and shopping centres. Alternatively hop onto this website for more information.

A Taste of Nottingham comes to a climax at the Great Notts Show in Old Market Square which takes place from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September.  There will be a special Taste of Nottingham Market as part of the show where a number of members of the BID in the food and drink sector are taking stalls.  Those taking part include Carluccio’s, Cookie Shake, Homemade, Nandos, Treat Kitchen, Rub Smokehouse, Weavers and Debenhams.

“A Taste of Nottingham is a great opportunity for people to enjoy the wide variety of exciting restaurants and bars in the city,” said Tom Waldron Lynch, vice-chairman of the Nottingham BID. “The number of new openings this year confirms just how vibrant our food and drink scene is.”

I couldn’t agree with Tom more. I’m going to pop by over the weekend, see you all there!
